I always wanted to be a fencer. My first coach was my father who fought with me with sticks on the veranda. Our fencing Equipment wasn’t exactly FIE standard but no-one
ever got seriously hurt.
When I was in my early teens my parents asked me whether I wanted to join the local fencing club but I was far too shy to even try it.
More than a decade later, in the eventful autumn of the year 2001, I more or less accidentally discovered the Dublin University Fencing Club and my fate was sealed.
Thanks to the enormous patience of Tony Quinn I began to understand the intricacies of fencing.
The great thing about learning to fence in Ireland is that you can start to fence in proper competitions very soon.
