Samuel L. Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain (1835-1910):
In 1884, at the age of 49, Mark Twain learned to ride one of the old high-wheel bicycles of that period. He wrote an account of his experience, but did not offer it for publication. The form
of bicycle he rode long ago became antiquated, but in the humor of his pleasantry is a quality which does not grow old.
It was on the 10th day of May--1884--that I confessed to age by mounting spectacles for the first time, and in the same hour I renewed my youth, to outward appearance, by mounting a
bicycle for the first time. The spectacles stayed on.
