The 12 Hours

The 12-hour race in Todtnauberg arguably is the best MTB event in the Black Forest. You can start as a single racer (crazy), as a team of two (tough), a team of three (great fun but still tough),or a team of four (for pros or beginners). It’s a relay race so you have to ride as fast as you can while your team mates try to get some rest. Great fun for both riders and spectators.

2003

Like in 2002 the weather promised to be quite bad but in contrast to last year it actually kept its promise. Fortunately Sebastian, David and I had our old Mitsubishi Bus, fully equipped with blankets and even a deckchair inside.

As the fastest and most experienced rider in our team I had to start the race. I fought my way through all those newbies, risked a lot on the downhills and would have crossed the line among the top 5 or so if my chain hadn’t got jammed on the very last technical downhill section. I had to jog, run and roll the last 3 km knowing that David was impatiently waiting for me. I really hope this kind of experience builds character because it was bloody painful. Both physically and mentally.

Anyway, the sun came out at noon and we did quite well in the race, finishing 24th out of 95 starters!

2002

In 2002 I luckily met Axel who convinced Thomas to join our three-man team. We had a lot of fun and were actually quite good, finishing 7th out of 71 teams.

Me on my first round in the morning.

Axel crossing the (literally) bloody river.
